June is National Adopt a Cat Month!

osha

Greetings T.A.R.A.!

I just wanted to tell you how much we are enjoying Senora (previously Osha), the newest feline addition to our family.  She is a fabulous cat, very loving and gets along well with our other pets. I was very surprised how quickly everybody acclimated to each other.

Having experienced life with new kittens, I have to sing from the mountain tops the great benefits of older cat adoption to your prospective adopters: one; you know the cat's personality--no surprises, two; their "kitten-crazies" are all worked-out--no leaping from your sofa to your mantle and breaking your pretties or scratching you or your children's arms trying to free themselves and three; you're saving a life, helping the vastly over populated adoption centers with literally overloads of great , deserving cats needing good homes. Kittens are cute.  There is no denying that, but they're only small for a short time and then they're adult size in a blink, although they may still act kitten-like for up to a year or so.

Adopting Senora was the smoothest, easiest experience we've ever had adopting a pet.  She fit right in.  We didn't have to "babysit" a young kitten, making sure she didn't have a potty accident  or scratch furniture.  We simply showed her where the litter boxes, food and water and her scratching posts were all located and voila! we could just enjoy her.  She is still young enough to enjoy her toys and play but in a manageable way which was important to our large, active household. She loves to walk circles around our legs brushing us with her tail, showing she "owns" us and basking in patches of sunlight in window sills, taking in the  breeze and bird chirps.  And at night, she is contented sleeping at our feet.

We couldn't have asked for a finer cat and we look forward to many wonderful years ahead with her.  Please tell your prospective adopters that they can contact me if they are "on the fence" about adopting an older cat.  Thank you for all the work you do providing homes for well-deserving animals.  It was a pleasure working with you in our adoption process.

    Sincerely, Sydney Evans and family

Adopting a dog - Who rescues whom?

boo

We received Aboo into our home in the summer of 2003, after she had been rescued by Country Kennels almost 2 years prior wandering the streets of Kansas City. Little did we know our high energy Akita would become the matriarch in our home second only to me. She has been a blessing and a guardian to our children. If not for Country Kennels she would surely have been put down.

In late summer 2007, Aboo stopped walking she showed a moderate positive for HME which we treated extensively with Doxocycline to no avail. We did towel carrys and finally hand carried Boo outside to potty. Little did we know it was her signal to us something was wrong, not with her but with one of the pack, her pack, our pack. We could not get her to leave our house, or our daughter Abby (2 1/2). In November of 2007, our daughter Abby was diagnosed with Leukemia. Abby's hemoglobin was 2.9 when we arrived at UW-Childrens a level which most often is incompatible with life. I am certain now that Boo was trying to tell us something was wrong. When we couldn't hear her cues, she laid down next to Abby I believe ready to go too. Fortunately, that didn't happen and when we returned home from the hospital after initial inductive therapy with our daughter Boo was good as new. Abby's counts have gone up and down. When her counts are good Boo plays outside and doesn't come in. When her counts are low Boo stays next to Abby and is virtually immovable. I have since met another parent in our practice, also the parent to a rescued Akita, and her dog did the exact same thing!

God Bless Dog Rescues, Country Kennels, and our Amazing "throw away" Akita.
